A sunset eclipse: find a free western horizon
- In Spain the sun is only 2–9° high during the eclipse, in the west-south-west. Hills, houses and haze near the horizon can hide it – choose a beach, a hill or an open plain facing west-south-west. In Valencia, Barcelona and Mallorca the eclipsed sun sets.

Safety
- Never look at the sun without certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) – not even during the ring of fire, when 83% of the sun is covered.
- Sunglasses, smoked glass and film are not enough. Cameras and binoculars need a solar filter in front of the lens.
- Low over the horizon the sun is dimmed, but still dangerous: keep the glasses on.
- When is the eclipse of 26 January 2028 in Spain? In the late afternoon, shortly before sunset: in Seville the maximum is at 17:55. In Portugal an hour earlier on the clock.
- Where can the ring of fire be seen? In a band over southern Portugal (Faro) and Spain (Huelva, Seville, Córdoba, Málaga, Granada, Murcia, Alicante, Valencia) and earlier over the Amazon (Manaus). Madrid and Lisbon lie just outside and see a deep partial eclipse.
- Is it a total eclipse? No: the moon is too far away to cover the sun completely, so a bright ring remains. It never gets dark and eclipse glasses are needed the whole time.
