Weather and travel

• In August the sky over Egypt and Saudi Arabia is almost always cloudless – the best odds anywhere on the path. Southern Spain is mostly sunny in August too, but at the Strait of Gibraltar the easterly Levante wind can bring haze and low cloud. Rooms in the path of totality are already in high demand – book early.

Watch it safely

• Eclipse glasses: Only certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) protect your eyes – sunglasses do not.
• No optics without a filter: Never look through a camera, binoculars or telescope without a proper solar filter in front of the lens.
• Glasses off only in totality: Only while the sun is completely covered may you look without a filter. As soon as the first bright edge returns, glasses back on.
• Pinhole projection: A hole in a piece of card projects small crescent suns onto the ground – safe for children, too.

• When is the 2027 solar eclipse? On Monday, 2 August 2027. In southern Spain it begins at about 09:40, totality follows at about 10:45 (local time); in Luxor the maximum is at about 13:05 local time.
• Where is the 2027 eclipse total? In a band up to about 258 km wide from the Strait of Gibraltar across North Africa, Egypt and Saudi Arabia to Yemen and Somalia – including Cádiz, Málaga, Tarifa, Tangier, Luxor and Jeddah.
• How long does totality last? Up to 6 min 23 s near Luxor – the longest totality over land until 2114. Tarifa gets 4 min 38 s, Málaga 1 min 50 s.
• Can the eclipse be seen in London? In London a sliver of the sun remains: 42% of its disc is covered, most at 10:00. The nearest city with totality is Malaga (1679 km).
• Which glasses do I need? Eclipse glasses to ISO 12312-2 – ordinary sunglasses do not protect you. Only during totality itself may you look without a filter; as soon as an edge of the sun reappears, put the glasses back on.
