Is daylight saving time ending?

  • As of September 2026
  • Not yet. The clocks change again on November 1, 2026 in the US and on October 25, 2026 in the UK. Where things stand:
  • July 14, 2026: The US House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act (H.R. 139) by 308 votes to 117. It would keep daylight saving time all year.
  • Next: The bill still needs the Senate and the President's signature. An earlier version passed the Senate in March 2022, but the House never voted on it.
  • Today: States may opt out of daylight saving time and stay on standard time all year, as Hawaii and most of Arizona do. Federal law does not let them keep daylight saving time all year.
  • UK: British Summer Time runs from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.
  • EU: The European Parliament voted to end the clock change in 2019, but EU governments have not agreed. The dates are set until 2031.

Clock change in your city

  • When do the clocks change in 2029? In the US and Canada the clocks go forward on March 11 and back on November 4. In the UK, the EU and most of Europe they change on March 25 and October 28.
  • Do the clocks go forward or back in the fall? Back, by one hour: in the US from 2:00 to 1:00 a.m. on November 4, in the UK from 2:00 to 1:00 a.m. on October 28. In spring they go forward again.
  • When does it get dark after the clocks go back? Sunset moves one hour earlier on the clock overnight. In London the sun sets at 17:42 on the day before the autumn change and at 16:40 on the day of the change.
  • Is daylight saving time ending? Not yet. The US House passed the Sunshine Protection Act on July 14, 2026, but the Senate has not voted on it. In the EU, Parliament voted in 2019 to end the clock change, but member states have not agreed, and the dates are set until 2031.
  • Do we gain an hour of sleep when the clocks go back? Yes. In autumn the hour from 1:00 to 2:00 a.m. happens twice, so the night is 25 hours long. In spring the night loses an hour.
  • Which states don't observe daylight saving time? Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year, as do Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa. The Navajo Nation in Arizona does change its clocks.
  • Why do we have daylight saving time? To move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. The US first used it in 1918; the current dates, the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, apply since 2007.
  • Does the UK change the clocks at the same time as the US? No. The UK changes on the last Sundays of March and October, the US on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. For a few weeks each year London is four hours ahead of New York instead of five.
