FAQ
- How much electricity does a balcony solar system produce in New York? With the settings above (0.9 kWp of modules) a balcony system in New York produces 927 kWh per year on average (weather 2019–2023).
- Is a balcony solar system worth it? With the settings above it saves about $98 a year and pays for itself after about 9.5 years. What matters is how much electricity runs during the day – the base load of fridge, router and standby devices uses most of it.
- Vertical on the railing or tilted on a stand? Vertical on the railing, the modules produce about 927 kWh a year in New York, tilted at 30° about 1,366 kWh. Vertical modules do relatively better in winter, when the sun is low.
- Is it worth it on an east, west or north balcony? East and west usually yield 15–25% less than south, but spread the power into the morning or evening, when more is often used. A north balcony hardly pays – change the direction above to see it for your place.
The rules in Germany
Since the Solarpaket I (May 2024), balcony systems with up to 800 W of inverter power and 2,000 Wp of modules only need a simplified registration in the Marktstammdatenregister – no application to the grid operator. A Schuko plug is tolerated; a Wieland socket is safer.
Is it worth it on an east, west or north balcony? East and west usually yield 15–25% less than south, but spread the power into the morning or evening, when more is often used. A north balcony hardly pays – change the direction above to see it for your place.
